4 Helpful Tips For Taking Care Of Your Roof This Summer

by Clinton Stone

When the weather is nice outside, you should take some time to take care of your roof. Your roof needs maintenance and care throughout the year, and summer is a great time to give your roof a little attention.

Clean the Gutters & Downspouts

Taking care of your gutters is one of the most important roofing tasks you can perform as a homeowner. Your gutters help channel the water from your roof away from your home. Without a proper or clean gutter system in place, water can back up and cause damage to your roof. Water can also run down the side of your home, damaging the siding and potentially even the foundation of your home.

All of these serious consequences can be avoided by simply cleaning your gutters a couple of times a year, and making sure the downspouts are clear of debris as well. Or you can hire someone to do this task for you. You can also install gutter covers that help keep debris out of your gutters and makes the cleaning process a little easier.

Check the Drainage

Make sure water is running correctly through your gutters. Once you clean them, run some water through your gutters with a hose, and make sure there are not any seams that need to be patched or anywhere the water is being misdirected.

Pay attention to where the water comes out of the downspouts as well, and make sure the water is going in the right direction away from your home.

Inspect the Ventilation

Next, get your ventilation checked out. Your roof should have vents. These vents help heat escape from the attic space of your home. Even if you don't have a full-on attic that you can walk around in, your home has some sort of attic space. This space can get really hot and can cause moisture to build up on the underside of your roof, which can cause damage to your roof. Get the ventilation system inspected, and make sure that you have enough ventilation.

Always Be Aware of Roof Damage

Always be on the lookout for things that could be wrong with your roof. Keep an eye out for damage to the shingles on your roof, such as shingles that are curled up or missing. Look out for flashing that pulls away from the roof or sealant that wears down around protrusions on your roof, such as vents. Any damage, no matter how little, should be taken care of right away.

Take some time this summer to clean your gutters and downspouts. Make sure your water is draining away from your home properly, and if it isn't, get some help fixing it. Make sure your roof is ventilating properly, and always be on the lookout for roof damage. For more information, consult with roofing companies like Jerry Newman Roofing & Remodeling Inc.
