Caring For Your New Kitchen Cabinets – The Cleaner Matters

by Clinton Stone

When you invest in new kitchen cabinets, you want to keep them looking new for as long as possible. How you care for the cabinets will play a significant role in how lone that new look will last. Here, you'll learn a few tips that can help you protect the looks of your cabinets by caring for them properly.

Wood Cabinets

Weekly cleanings of your wood cabinets will help to keep them looking great. All you need to use is a mixture of white vinegar and water. Try adding a quarter cup of white vinegar to a half gallon of water. Shake it up, spray a cleaning cloth and wipe down the cabinets. Avoid spraying the mixture directly on the wood – doing so can cause the mixture to fill cracks and crevices and if you don't get it all off, it could cause damage to the wood if it doesn't dry quickly.

A couple of times each year, you'll want to give the cabinets a deep cleaning. This is done with a mixture of white vinegar, rubbing alcohol and dish soap. Mix two cups of white vinegar with four tablespoons of rubbing alcohol. Add a few drops of dish soap and shake it up. Again, spray the cloth with the solution and wipe the cabinets. This will remove the grease and grime that is built up and leave them looking great.

Painted Cabinets

The best thing to clean your painted cabinets with is just water with some dish soap mixed in. Try to make your water as hot as your hands can handle – wear rubber gloves so you can make the water even hotter.

Dip the cleaning cloth into the soapy water and wring it out well. Wipe the cabinets entirely. If you come across grease that just won't come off with the mixture, put a couple of drops of the dish soap on the cloth and wipe the area. The dish soap should break down the grease quickly. Rinse the cabinet, and you're good to go.

Glass Cabinets

Glass cabinets are pretty easy to clean, but they aren't that easy to keep clean. If the glass is trimmed with real wood, use white vinegar to clean them. The ammonia in the glass cleaner could cause the wood to become discolored and dry it out.

After the glass is clean, apply a coat of water repellant for glass. Products like Rain-X will help any water or steam that builds on the glass to bead up and roll off. This will make the cleaning process much easier.
