Tips for Saving Money on Your Dumpster Rental

by Clinton Stone

If you want to clear the clutter from your home so you can have more space or to get ready to renovate, then you may want to rent a dumpster to make the job easier and quicker. You can get rid of all your junk at once rather than filling up your garbage can to overflowing for weeks on end. It's worth the expense to rent a dumpster for the convenience it provides. Still, you don't want to spend money unnecessarily. Here are a few tips for saving money when you clear your clutter with a dumpster rental.

Learn Regulations First

Before you have the dumpster delivered, be sure to check the regulations of the dumpster company as well as your local city codes. This could save you from fines and additional fees you weren't expecting. For instance, your city probably has regulations on where the dumpster can be positioned and how long it can stay in your yard. If you don't comply, you may incur daily fees. Also, you want to know what items the dumpster company prohibits. You may not be able to put paint cans, electronics, or yard chemicals in a rented dumpster. You want to know this upfront or you may have to pay additional fees that drive up the cost of your rental.

Give Away Heavy Items

The price of renting a dumpster is determined by the size of the dumpster and the weight of all the junk you put in it. So, you save money by renting a smaller dumpster and by not filling it with very heavy stuff if possible. One thing you can try is separating out your metal junk, such as bed frames and appliances. A metal recycler may be willing to haul them away for free in order to get possession of the metal. Also, call your municipal garbage service. Your city may pick up a limited amount of junk for free. You probably won't be able to get rid of very much, but the city may pick up a heavy table or other furniture that would take up a lot of room in a dumpster. If the furniture is in good enough shape, you can put it on your curb with a free sign or advertise it for free in classified ads in print and online. You may be able to get rid of a lot of your stuff that way, and the big advantage is the people who take it haul it away for free.

Organize the Dumpster

If you organize the space, you can rent a smaller dumpster and save money. You may need to dismantle furniture so it doesn't take as much room. Think of a dumpster like you would a storage unit where you need to get as much stuff as possible in a small space. This allows you to put much more stuff in than you would get in if you just throw bags, boxes, and junk over the side with no organization. Plus, when you have a system for stacking things, you can fill the dumpster without overfilling it. The company may require you to keep all the junk below the top of the dumpster or charge you extra when they pick it up.

You may also be charged for the length of time you have the dumpster. For that reason, you may want to do all your clutter clearing first and have the junk stacked in your yard ready to go when the dumpster arrives. This saves you from paying for multiple days because clearing out your clutter takes longer than you anticipated. Talk to a company like Ware Disposal for more cost-saving tips.
