If you want to keep mosquitoes at bay while you are relaxing on your backyard deck, consider planting marigolds and floss flowers around the edges of the deck because they repel the pests. If you have dogs that enjoy digging up your plants, you can still create a comfortable outdoor oasis by creating flower boxes to hang on the handrails around your deck. The guide below walks you through the process of creating customized flower boxes using gutters.
Measure Your Handrails
The first thing you need to do is to measure the handrails around your deck. You purchase gutters based on their length and you need to be sure that you buy enough of the gutters to make the perfect sized flower boxes.
Purchase Your Supplies
Next, you will need to go to a home improvement store and purchase the appropriate length of plastic gutters to create a flower box on each of the handrails going around your deck. You will also need to purchase two gutter end caps for each flower box you plan to create. Finally, you will need to get liquid cement so that you can permanently attach the caps onto the ends of the gutter.
Cut the Gutters
Next, you need to determine how long you want each flower box to be. Measure the area where you want to hang the flower boxes individually and then measure and mark the gutters where they need to be cut. Use a saw or snips to cut the gutters to the appropriate length. Sand down the edges where you cut the gutters until they are smooth with a coarse sandpaper.
Add the End Caps
Paint the liquid cement inside of one of the gutter caps. Firmly place the cap onto the end of the gutter and hold it in place for a minute or two. You want to be sure that you give the cement time to adhere. Repeat the process with the rest of the caps.
Hang the Flower Boxes
Once the caps have dried fully, hold a flower box flush against the exterior side of your handrails. You want to hang the flower boxes on the outer side of the handrail to ensure your dogs do not have easy access to the flowers that you plan to plant in them. Use screws and a drill to attach the flower box to the handrail. Be sure to use enough screws to keep the box in place when the soil and the flowers are added to it.
Once you are done hanging the flower boxes, use the drill to carefully drill holes in the bottom of the gutters so that water can drain out of them easily. Add soil and the flowers to the gutter and you should be able to sit comfortably on your back deck without having to worry about mosquitos biting you.
